Masaru Mito

East Asian Languages & Literatures

Professor Masaru Mito of East Asian Languages and Literatures at UH Mānoa believes that “language learning goes beyond acquiring vocabulary—it is a journey of personal growth, empathy, and meaningful communication.” From emphasizing “real-world interactions,” to utilizing “authentic materials from diverse sources,” Prof. Mito makes sure to provide ample opportunities for his students to practice their language skills with cultural accuracy and clearly defined purpose. In addition to major skills in second language acquisition, Prof. Mito integrates crucial skills such as critical thinking and digital literacy in his teaching to enhance students’ competencies. Evident in his students’ comments, Prof. Mito successfully accomplishes his mission “to help students find happiness within themselves and bring joy to others by fostering cross-cultural language learning and developing interpersonal relationships.” One student wrote that “most valuable aspect of the course was Mito sensei.” Another student agreed, calling him “the best Japanese teacher” and noted: “You deserve the best to come, I see nothing but your genuine love to teach people Japanese, and hope your next set of students treat you right.”
