Chad Miller

School of Teacher Education

A faculty member at School of Teacher Education at UH Mānoa, Professor Chad Miller practices “the philosopher’s pedagogy” which he developed over the years in his profession. In essence, “the philosopher’s pedagogy positions the teacher as a participant in the learning process, values student perspectives, and requires a slower, more deliberate and reflective conception of learning.” Prof. Miller fully participates in the learning process as he and his students guide each other. In his classes, “students aim to know more about themselves, their peers, and the world they live in, thus their questions, beliefs, and experiences become the focus of study.” His method of teaching focuses on three central tenets: “the cultivation of a safe learning environment,” “the development of a positive orientation towards confusion,” and “time for philosophical reflection.” His teaching effectiveness and deep care for student success are evident in this student comment: “Dr. Miller models successful teaching strategies to support the development of students’ own teaching practices. He seems genuinely invested in the growth and improvement of his students.”
