Jennifer Small Griswold
2025 Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching

Experienced professor of Atmospheric Sciences at UH Mānoa, Jennifer Small Griswold centers curiosity, integrity, and collaboration in her classes. Highly cognizant of “rapidly evolving scientific and technological landscape,” Prof. Small Griswold’s innovative teaching techniques feature “experiential learning… such as phenomena-based scavenger hunts” and hands-on activities with big data. Her efforts in incorporating programming languages like Python and MATLAB are to make sure that “students benefit from expanded career opportunities and are better positioned to contribute to solving pressing atmospheric and climate science challenges.” Her contributions to teaching at an interdisciplinary curricular level include “the creation of a new Climate Science and Society undergraduate certificate program, which… bridges the gap between climate science and its critical applications in disciplines such as economics, policy, health, and urban planning.” As a first-generation college student, Small Griswold has the utmost empathy for her students, “ensuring [her] students feel seen and supported” whether she is teaching an introductory undergraduate course or a graduate seminar in meteorology.
