Features

Spring 2024 marks the inauguration of this new space for teaching and learning on campus. Sunlight illuminates Dean Hall 104 Culture Lab, located on UH Mānoa’s historic Quad. The interior space benefits from a view of surrounding trees, sky and an entry to Campus Center. A vision grounded in the concept of agility in good teaching practice and good design practice, its inspired, engaging features include:

  • capacity for 25 students
  • a de-centered classroom with multiple points of focus
  • informal, agile furniture allowing for multiple seating options and arrangements for courses with performance activities associated with cultural practices and knowledge, such as: music, dance, drama, storytelling, and collaborative activities such as food sharing, and paired and group arrangements
  • multiple white board and sliding, translucent writing surfaces that provide options for all students to utilize, as well as the teacher. The translucent design was purposeful to allow daylight to penetrate the space and reduce the classroom’s electrical lighting
  • glass writing and projection surfaces that are dual purpose to fully take advantage of the limited wall space. Short throw projectors offer more interactive use of the projection surface to minimize faculty and student shadows cast on the projection surface
  • generous windows with high performance, clear heat shedding window film applied to the new tinted jalousie windows to reduce heat gain from the direct east, south, and west exposures
  • roller shades provided for all windows to further control glare and heat gain allowing the new variable refrigerant flow air conditioning system to perform efficiently and quietly. This air conditioning system was selected specifically for its energy efficiency, controllability, and low background noise to facilitate improved indoor acoustics and environmental quality
  • OneScreen smart touchscreen that provides software on a live web page, with deletion of images features and image sizing that can be displayed for interaction between teacher and students and among students. Wireless technology eliminates the need for cables and plugs.
  • BYOD technology, with available charging towers
  • countertop, cabinets, and a sink is provided for enhanced cultural teaching opportunities
