Dr. Jeffrey Drazen, oceanographer at UH Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, inspires students and the broader community to understand the vital connections between the ocean and society. Dr. Drazen’s teaching is driven by enthusiasm for deep-sea ecology and fisheries, engaging students through dynamic lectures, real-world examples, and critical inquiry into what we know, and what remains unknown, about the ocean.

In the classroom, he fosters inclusive, discussion-based learning environments that emphasize critical thinking and scientific exploration. Through interactive strategies such as think-pair-share, student-led discussions, and hands-on activities, students learn to evaluate scientific evidence, question assumptions, and connect ocean science to their own lives. Field experiences from fishponds and aquaculture sites to research vessels further immerse students in experiential learning, often transforming their academic and career paths.

A hallmark of Dr. Drazen’s impact is co-leading the creation of a new graduate program in Sustainable Fisheries, addressing a critical gap in ocean education and preparing future leaders for the Pacific region. His mentorship extends beyond the university through supervision of student research and extensive K–12 outreach, including classroom visits and teacher training workshops that expand ocean literacy across Hawaiʻi. By combining passion, innovation, and a commitment to community engagement, he exemplifies teaching excellence, cultivating the next generation of scientists, stewards, and informed global citizens.
