Associate Professor, Ethnic Studies

Dr. Ethan Caldwell, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies, is guided by a belief in the transformative power of education rooted in a culture and practice of care. Recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences students bring to the classroom, Dr. Caldwell fosters inclusive spaces grounded in dialogue, critical engagement, and mutual respect. His teaching encourages students to connect theory with lived experience, and to thoughtfully engage issues of race, intersectionality, and social justice within Hawaiʻi and beyond.

In his undergraduate courses in ethnic studies, Professor Caldwell draws on his expertise in African American Studies, gender, and visual culture. His courses emphasize critical thinking, collaborative learning, and real-world application through creative assignments, contemporary media, and community-based engagement.

Committed to student development both inside and outside the classroom, he mentors teaching assistants, supervises independent research, and creates opportunities for global and local engagement, including virtual international collaborations. His approach empowers students to confront challenging topics with care, empathy, and intellectual rigor.
