Loong

2023 Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Community Service

While sustaining exemplary academic scholarship and teaching, Professor Chet-Yeng Loong leaves a legacy to Hawai‘i as a driving creative force in the distinct area of music education, expression, and experience. Her laudable career as a professor has been a focused, intelligent and elegant endeavor to educate and inspire generations of young students and music educators through teaching and mentoring on a daily basis, as well as through spearheading of initiatives. Dr. Loong’s creation of multiple innovative resources on multicultural music education with an emphasis on Asian and Pan Pacific materials contributes deeply to the promotion of culturally responsive teaching and learning and exemplifies the value of servant leadership in a way that extends her influence beyond the corridors and classrooms of the university, as numerous former students attest. One of many local music educators speak of the national and international demands on her as a music education clinician, “We are grateful for Professor Chet-Yeng Loong’s contributions to the music community, and to be able to call her one of our own.”
