An Evidence-Based Active Learning Strategy

Team-Based Learning is a comprehensive small-group instructional process that has been used across more than 100 academic disciplines for over 30 years. The strategy is supported by more than 2,000 published journal articles, and over 300 educational institutions worldwide have implemented TBL as an instructional approach.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe team formation, the Readiness Assurance Process, and the 4S problem-solving framework 
  • Apply the four essential elements of Team-Based Learning 
  • Identify next steps to continue learning about Team-Based Learning

Briju Thankachan, Ph.D.

Certified Trainer in Team-Based Learning (TBL)

Dr. Briju Thankachan is the Executive Director of EdTech Society and a certified trainer in Team-Based Learning. He previously held the position of Director of Curriculum and Assessment Design at Ohio University and was a visiting faculty member at IIT Bombay. Dr. Thankachan developed the Instructional Decisions Model to aid educators in learning design and is a certified Quality Matters peer reviewer who designed online and hybrid courses for Ohio University’s School of Nursing. He advises G.S. Gawande College in India on technology integration and is the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence at GSG. As an adjunct professor, he taught at Ohio University and served as president of the AECT’s International Division in 2018. He also holds a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard and a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
