Looking for Ethics in All the Right Places:

A Workshop on Developing
E-Focus Courses

Wednesday, April 10, 2024
11:30 am – 12:45 pm
Kuykendall 106 Events Room

Ethics refers to standards and practices that tell us how human beings ought to act in the many situations in which they find themselves” (Markkula Center for Applied Ethics). As such, ethics is ubiquitous and relevant to any discipline. At UHM, all students are required to take one E-Focus course to graduate. However, not all fields/topics have an obvious connection to ethical issues. This workshop aims to provide UHM faculty with ideas for designing and offering Contemporary Ethical Issues (E) Focus courses.

Three panelists from various disciplines (e.g., Engineering, Family and Consumer Sciences, Hawaiian Studies) will share their experiences with offering E-Focus courses at UHM. In particular, they will address questions about finding “ethics” in various disciplines, using an ethics framework, and designing course activities and assessments in their classrooms. In addition, we have a specialist in philosophy/ethics education to discuss the importance of ethics in education at large. Through this workshop, we aim to cultivate participants’ ideas for E-Focus courses.
