Higa

Assistant Professor,
John A. Burns School of Medicine

Dr. Jason Kenji P. Higa of the Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology at John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) teaches volumes of information with life-and-death implications to hundreds of students in mass lectures. His highly innovative pedagogy augments and magnifies prerequisite knowledge through analogy, mnemonics, physical engagement, incorporation of local and Hawaiian terminology, designed to teach beyond the test rather than to it. A former student writes, "To this day, I remember a great deal of the lecture material solely based on how it was taught to be ingrained rather than memorized." Complementing cross-sectional images of a text, Professor Higa organizes students to rise from their seats to collectively represent the process of the heart muscle pumping blood through stages from a healthy to a failing heart. Enacting these stages of life-to-death simultaneously enlivens intellectual growth and memorializes the solemn responsibilities of future health care professionals. A JABSOM student reflects, "I wonder if I would be where I am today, the same person I've become, had it not been for Dr. Jason Higa."
